Pyramids are situated about 10 kms from the center of Cairo, on the south western outskirts. To get there is more difficult that we thought. Even in the ticket window at the bus terminal near Tahrir square they give us various bus numbers. But in the end we make it. Single bus ticket is 1 LE, so it’s senseless to overpay for an organized trip with an agency, not to mention taking a taxi. Unless you can’t bear to spend half an hour on a bus. You can also take a metro to Giza station at Pyramids Road and take a mini-bus from there.
Pyramids are one of the seven wonders of the world which has remained until our times. Rather vast area may be visited daily from 8 to 16; entry inside pyramids is closed from 12 to 13, it’s not allowed to enter inside them with a photo or video camera.
Mind the cheaters, they are really outrageous! It’s best not to pay any attention to them and go directly to the ticket window. Then, with a ticket in your hand, show it only to the uniformed employee. Every now and then young people come to tourists and present themselves as public employees, ask for tickets and want to show them around – they are ordinary touts, and it’s not that easy to get the ticket back from them, unless you firmly threaten to call the police.

Admission to the area costs 60 LE. It includes also some tombs accessible to public and a small museum. You pay separately to entry the biggest pyramids: Cheops (Great Pyramid) – 100 LE, Chefren (Khafre) – 30 LE, Mykerinos (Menkaure) – 30 LE, and for Mers Ankh tomb– 50 LE.
We heard from our friends that the pyramids are not interesting from inside because all that was found there (and had not been robbed earlier) is now exhibited in the Egyptian Museum. We decide to visit only Chefren pyramid – just out of curiosity. Indeed, nothing interesting, yet I guess we would’ve regretted if we hadn’t entered.
However thanks to the political situation there are not so many tourists here as usual – we can walk in the shade of the pyramids, take many pictures, sit near Sphinx and like thousands of people before us – to wonder what or who it represents…
You can spend by the pyramids a few hours, and if you want you can stay here a whole day. There’s something magical in this place, although it might be only our consciousness that we are in a place where thousands of years ago a very well developed civilization flourished.
A moment of reflection by the Sphinx |
For those who like „light and sound” sort of attractions there are evening shows organized. You can buy a ticket here and come by yourself or you can buy a tour package from an agent.
